I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO ~ 4

Sometimes on Saturday mornings and much to the 3 ladies disgust, Lito would travel to world acclaimed Fleishhacker Zoo and return with the world’s best fertilizer.

Chopped, churned and mashed by a windmill brought in from Holland,

the feces of the zoo’s animals spread out over the entire garden would instantly create phenomenal foliage growth.

As well as served to totally piss-off their neighbors because of the immense stink!

Now 23 years of age and disconsolate that Lito summarily rejected every good and worthy man that had asked to marry her, my Mom was becoming extremely discouraged and impatiently wishing to very soon escape Lito’s autocratic rule at home.

On a cool and foggy Saturday evening at the Fairmont Hotel’s Papagayo Room, the family went to dance to Xavier Cugat and his orchestra.

Arriving early to obtain front row seating, they were just in time to catch the opening act ~ Los Embajadores de la Musica (The Ambassadors of the Music), my father’s 26 piece Latin Jazz band.

Gazing with wonderment at my father all spiffed-out in his “Ricky Ricardo” puff sleeved bolero shirt swaying his hips, pounding the congas and exhorting his band mates into a musical frenzy, my mom would later admit to falling in love at 1st sight.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm….

Washing up and changing his sweat drenched clothes, my father stayed with most of his band to dance to “Coogie”.

Also eyeing my mother while he was performing on stage, he jauntily strolled up to my family’s table and asked her to dance.

An instinctive and graceful dancer who knew all the latest steps, my mom also impressed my dad with her ease on the parquet.

Song after song they continued dancing together, totally enraptured by each other’s physical beauty.

On this starry, starry night the Puerto Rican “Clark Gable” became enamored with Miss Costa Rica.
