"ALL IN THE FAMILY"
When my dad inquired if he could visit the 1st time after he had abandoned us in 1956, I was all excited to see him.
But my smile faded real quick when he came to the door with 2 other insurance salesmen.
Craving quality time after 3 years of not being with him and my brother never knowing his father since he left when Tappy was only 6 months old, my dad was more interested in being a tour guide for his Puerto Rican friends than a father to us.
Having to share my dad with other adult men was not my Mom’s and most certainly not my idea of a reconciliatory visit.
2 years passed and he advised that he was coming to San Francisco for an insurance convention and asked again if he could see us.
Tappy starting to realize that he had a father jumped up & down and said yes, but I waved-off coming to the phone no matter how much my Mom pleaded to at least be polite and talk to him.
Refusing to, he came to San Francisco anyway with 8 other salesmen and I hid in my bedroom when the doorbell rang.
Both Lita and my Mom acting like his attorneys pleading with me to relent, I finally and greedily caved-in when a 18k gold Seamaster Omega watch that he got as a prize from Mutual of Omaha suddenly appeared under my bedroom door.
Talk about CONDITIONAL forgiveness!
This then was the beginning of a highly charged emotional Rocky Mountain roller coaster ride with my father that lamentably would last until the end of his life.
Pray to The Holy Spirit constantly and simply from your heart, just as earnestly as He was your very best friend.
