Responding to Cal that I would like to take Sandy out, he said that I was already preapproved by his parents and that his uncle in law would also consent.
The following weekend while painting her room I asked Sandy if she would like to go out to dinner and see a movie.
Receiving a big smile yes, all the way home I thought about what I would wear and where to take her for a nice night out.
Deciding on Grison’s Steakhouse ~ a historic San Francisco gourmet mainstay on Van Ness Avenue famous for their world-class prime rib served on rolling silver carts, we had an absolute ball.
An unabashed carnivore, I ordered the super thick King’s End Cut ~ which seemed like ½ a steer to Sandy.
After a scrumptious dessert of Baked Alaska, we went to see Steve McQueen’s new movie Bullitt, shot in our native and very proud San Francisco.
Giddily speeding home like McQueen ~ especially on the curves, after that 1st date Sandy and I were inseparable and soon decided to take that next big step and “go steady.”
Not knowing what to say when they saw the new little ring on my finger, both Lita and my Mom were very concerned that I was engaged.
Counseling me lovingly that I was way too young to get married, I told them that I agreed 100% and that Sandy and I were just going steady.
Upon meeting her, they were very pleased that I had chosen a good Catholic girl, not like the half-naked starlets I lusted for in the Hollywood mags or in the Playboy under my bed.
Constantly frequenting all the local movie theaters and drive-ins, rock concerts were our very favorite date destination.
Every weekend we were at either Winterland, the 49'ers Kezar Stadium, The Cow Palace, Civic Auditorium, Fillmore West, Cal Berkeley Community Theater and Santa Clara Fairgrounds.
We were so blessed to see The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, The Byrds, The Moody Blues, Buffalo Springfield, The Zombies, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Beach Boys, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Jethro Tull, Steve Miller, Van Morrison, etc., etc., etc., and our very, very favorite ~ Jimi Hendrix!
Pray to The Holy Spirit constantly and simply from your heart, just as earnestly as He was your very best friend.
