POWER TO THE PEOPLE?
Posting vote-for-me signs all over the senior class corridor walls, my most effective tool was pressing the flesh, that my father taught me when I was very young.
He stressed the importance of shaking people’s hands to demonstrate friendliness and sharing physical connection.
My opponent was Greg O’Sullivan, a starting guard on the varsity basketball team. A leader of several school clubs over the past three years, Greg had the administrative experience that I lacked because I chose working versus school participation.
Nevertheless, I felt that I really had a chance to beat him because of my developing cult of personality.
The final step before the actual vote was to give our speeches before the entire student body of about 1,000 people including the teachers and administration.
Greg and I the last to speak after the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior candidates, I started to transfer my public speaking fear energy into faith-based power.
Standing behind the curtain listening to Greg’s half-hearted applause, I knew right then and there that I would win.
Striding confidently across the stage in the cavernous auditorium, I eagerly approached the podium.
Having made an outline of the speech that I placed below the microphone, I immediately decided to forgo my notes and focus on all of my friends’ faces.
As I panned the audience, I started connecting with most everyone in the first five rows.
Suddenly, I felt this beautiful energy come over me and the words that I spoke were Holy Spirit inspired.
Blessed right then with His gift of eloquence, I mesmerized my fellow students and some teachers with vowing to effect changes for the betterment of the Senior class as well as the entire student body.
Promising that when elected President, we would all fly to Disneyland for a weekend surely did not hurt my chances!
Pray to The Holy Spirit constantly and simply from your heart, just as earnestly as He was your very best friend.
