POWER TO THE PEOPLE?
Leaving the podium to the only standing ovation, I literally felt that my feet were not touching the ground.
Shaking hands with all of my mates backstage, the vote would take place after lunch.
An appendage member of "The Vikings", O’Sullivan did not look any too happy while picking at his brownbag lunch. The final results came in an hour later via the school intercom.
My entire geography class standing up to cheer my 43 vote victory, I acknowledged their praise with a very satisfied and grateful smile.
Already having made plans to go Sigmund Stern Grove immediately after school irregardless of the election result, we caravanned to Mr. Wu’s to buy several cases of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.
Even during the downpour at The Grove clubhouse, we all celebrated what would become a very eventful Senior year.
Cal, for the last three years having participated in the English club, speech club, drama club and an honor roll student, easily won his race becoming Riordan’s student body president.
Overjoyed for him, I invited Cal to a tasty charbroiled burger at Westlake Joe’s ~ one of his and Sandy’s family’s favorite special occasion dinner destinations.
Having decided to forgo the graveyard shift at Safeway and concentrate on working solely in the produce department, instead of lining up my Tonka Trucks and Matchbox Cars like I did as a kid, I became a master at stacking oranges, apples, peaches, pears etc., into neat little pyramids.
Upon returning to the sales floor with much-needed backroom inventory, I started unpacking a box of grapefruits.
Taught to always rotate the old ones on the top and place the new ones on the bottom, I noticed a little note under a particularly large grapefruit.
The note read “I want to talk to you”, Love, Lana.”
Not knowing who in the world was Lana, I looked all around to see if she was still in the store ~ and nada.
Pray to The Holy Spirit constantly and simply from your heart, just as earnestly as He was your very best friend.
